Ivan Herrera is still using his feet to make an impact on the athletic fields.
So far, he's getting more kicks on the soccer pitch than he did on the gridiron. Herrera's first-half goal helped the Rising Sun boys soccer team edge Elkton 2-1 last Thursday night at Calvert Regional Park. Young and old still like to play the sport they love. Mike Seydell, a former Rising Sun High School soccer player, Coach Ken Ulrich, and John Harnett helped make that happen when they planned the annual alumni soccer game. Their goal was to create a stronger sense of community with the current players and the alumni. They also wanted a game that had meaning. Hartnett's brother, a former RSHS soccer player, was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2012. "So we decided to create the alumni game to raise money for a scholarship in his name", Seydell said in an email. "This year we decided to expand and allow for the women's alumni to play a game as well because last years was so successful", Seydell wrote. "Last year it was just boys and the game raised around $2200", said Harnett. "Around 50 guys and around 22 girls came out to play". Youth was served.
The "Young Boyz" (2012-2016) defeated the Old Dawgz (1997, 2004-2011) 7-4 in the inaugural Rising Sun High School boys soccer alumni game Saturday at Calvert Regional Park. Round 1 to Rising Sun.
There will be much more at stake in Round 2. The Tigers' boys soccer team topped visiting Harford Tech 1-0 Tuesday afternoon, October 27 in a playoff preview. The two teams meet in the second round of the playoffs Tuesday night, November 3 on Tech's turf. At halftime of its final regular season home game, the Rising Sun boys soccer program honored members of its 2005 state finalist squad.
Then the 2015 Tigers went out and played like the team from 10 years ago. The Perryville boys soccer team dropped a pair of games last week.
Joppatowne pounded the Panthers 6-1 last Thursday afternoon. The Rising Sun boys soccer team lost 4-1 to host Aberdeen Tuesday evening.
Trailing 2-0, the Tigers got back in the game on a Bryan Butler goal in the 63rd minute. Brad Alexander drew a foul outside the top of the box 25 yards out. Kane Watson blasted a shot. Eagles goalie Anthony Cuellar made the initial save, but Butler pounced on the rebound to put Rising Sun on the board. The Perryville boys soccer team won three games last week including a 2-0 triumph over visiting Bohemia Manor Friday afternoon.
The Rising Sun boys soccer team demonstrated it could play with the top dogs.
Fallston showed it's still one of the teams to beat. The visiting Cougars came back from a 3-1 deficit and scored the game-winner five minutes into the second overtime period to top the Tigers 4-3 on a rain-soaked field Thursday afternoon. |
